Size and Value Anomalies under Regime Shifts

چکیده
This paper finds strong evidence of time-variations in the joint distribution of returns on a stock market portfolio and portfolios tracking sizeand value effects. Mean returns, volatilities and correlations between these equity portfolios are found to be driven by underlying regimes that introduce short-run market timing opportunities for investors. The magnitude of the premia on the size and value portfolios and their hedging properties are found to vary across regimes. Regimes are shown to have a large impact on the optimal asset allocation especially under rebalancing and on investors’ utility. Regimes also have a considerable impact on hedging demands, which are positive when the investor starts from more favorable regimes and negative when starting from bad states. Recursive out-of-sample forecasting experiments show that portfolio strategies based on models that account for regimes dominate single-state benchmarks.

Conditional heteroscedasticity as a leading indicator of ecological regime shifts.
Regime shifts are massive, often irreversible, rearrangements of nonlinear ecological processes that occur when systems pass critical transition points. Ecological regime shifts sometimes have severe consequences for human well-being, including eutrophication in lakes, desertification, and species extinctions. Theoretical and laboratory evidence suggests that statistical anomalies may be detect...
متن کاملThe Predictability of Returns with Regime Shifts in Consumption and Dividend Growth
We model consumption and dividend growth as di¤erent processes across two latent regimes. We estimate the equilibrium model over 1930-2009 and show that the second regime is associated with recessions, market downturns, higher risk premia, lower consumption and dividend growth, higher volatility of returns and growth rates, and lower market-wide price-dividend ratio. The model performs better a...
متن کاملHeteroskedasticity as a leading indicator of desertification in spatially explicit data
Regime shifts are abrupt transitions between alternate ecosystem states including desertification in arid regions due to drought or overgrazing. Regime shifts may be preceded by statistical anomalies such as increased autocorrelation, indicating declining resilience and warning of an impending shift. Tests for conditional heteroskedasticity, a type of clustered variance, have proven powerful le...

Introduction: The number, size, shape, and structure of teeth in humans show very wide variation among different populations and sometimes within the same population. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of developmental dental anomalies among patients attending the faculty of dentistry in Rasht, Iran over a period of seven months. Materials and methods: This cross-se...
متن کاملOn the Non-Stationary Relationship between the Siberian High and Arctic Oscillation
An area-weighted k-means clustering method based on pattern correlations is proposed and used to explore the relationship between the Siberian High (SH) and Arctic Oscillation (AO) during the winter months (December-January-February) of 1948-2014. Five regimes are identified. Four of these five regimes (comprising 171 of 201 months) show a negative correlation between the SH and AO indices, whi...
